Movie #299

12/31/2008

299. Death Race (2008)
Off DVD
Paul W.S. Anderson sucks the big one again, BIG SURPRISE! There's not really even any guilty pleasure to be had.

Movies #290-298

12/28/2008

297. Lakeview Terrace (2008)
Other Means
This movie had some terrible trailers for it out during the summer that put me off seeing it until now, and I don't really understand the acclaim that this movie is getting, it's just an average movie with Sam Jackson. I was surprised of how much the movie gave his character solo screen time, because in the trailer it seemed like the entire movie was just from the viewpoint of the neighbors.

298. Ghost Town (2008)
Other Means
This is the first movie to really capture some of the magic that Ricky Gervais showed in The Office. Overall this movie is really funny, but in the last 40 minutes it really goes for the heart and forgets the comedy somewhat. Overall worth the watch.

12/27/2008

294. Towelhead (2007)
Other Means
I really enjoyed this disturbing at times film. Harvey Dent really shines here as always.

295. Seven Pounds (2008)
Other Means
So I remember watching the trailer for this and wondering what the hell is actually going on in the movie. And I was left with the same feeling over 100 minutes into the movie, and then when I found out the twist that puts everything into context, it just wasn't that interesting. This movie is pretty much unwatchable.

296. Religulous (2008)
Other Means
While Bill Maher is pretty funny in this, he does kind of bully people a few times that are so dumb you almost empathize with them. But overall there are quite a few laughs throughout.

12/25/2008

293. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
In Theaters
This movie was sooo good, and definitly worth the lengthy run time. After I saw the movie I heard people compare it to Forrest Gump which completely baffled me, the two movies are nothing alike in tone or structure. David Fincher once again gets cinematic gold.

12/24/2008

292. Surfer, Dude (2008)
Other Means
I was surprised at how good this movie was, it really got slammed by the press but it a movie so relaxed and semi-wacky that it all works when put together. If you take life too seriously then you probably won't like this movie.

12/23/2008

290. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
In Theaters
I really liked this movie, definitely worth watching. This movie has so much hype around it already I don't want to add to it and then spoil your enjoyment of the movie.

291. Gunnin' for That #1 Spot (2008)
Off On Demand
While this documentary is extremely engaging in the profiles of the top high school basketball players, the documentary is built around the game they play on THE court in Harlem. But the doc features way too much in game footage, it's boring compared to the actual profile of the players. This is good, but flawed.

Movies #287-289

12/21/2008

288. The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)
In Theaters
Wow, so this movie really has nothing to do with the original, and it makes me wonder why this movie was necessary at all. At the end of the movie you feel like everything that happened was completely pointless.

289. American Teen (2008)
Other Means
While this comes off almost too polished for me to believe that's completely a documentary I really did enjoy the presentation of the stories and characters. I'm the last person who wants to relive high school but I still enjoyed this.

12/16/2008

287. Gran Torino (2008)
Other Means
This movie is really good, I hadn't seen Clint play the main character do this much acting in years and he's perfect for the part. While the movie isn't perfect by any means, it's just a lot of fun seeing Clint play a grizzled badass.

Movies #285-286

12/10/2008

285. My Name is Bruce (2007)
Other Means
I think the concept for the movie in my mind greatly exceeded anything that this movie ended up putting on the screen, i wanted a mad cap film full of humor and this movie is really sentimental and barely held my interest sometimes. I didn't know tell I saw the credits at the end of the film that Bruce Campbell directed it.

286. Hamlet 2 (2008)
Other Means
While this movie does have a few points were I doubt if I should be watching it, overall I found this movie to be really funny even with the terrible trailers that plagued it at the time of release.

Movies #283-284

12/06/2008

283. Resident Evil : Degeneration (2008)
Other Means
While this is miles a head of all of the live action Resident Evil movies (that doesn't take a whole lot), this still has some plenty clunky writing that reminds me the cutscenes from the original Resident Evil games, and no surprise this movie is a continuation of those so it does fit in nicely with the games though.

12/03/2008

284. Season of the Witch (1972)
VHS
This movie is a real trip, don't watch this sober if you must watch this at all.

Monday, December 1, 2008

Movies #281-282

11/29/2008

281. Zach and Miri Make A Porno (2008)
Other Means
While this pretty has the entire cast from a Judd Apatow movie this film pales in comparison to any of the recently produced Apatow flicks, this movie just isn't funny and it was sold as a comedy. It's just too sentimental for it's own good, this was hard to sit through the whole movie even though I like pretty much all the actors in this individually.

282. Eagle Eye (2008)
Other Means
Yes, this is as stupid as you could have predicted. I couldn't really even enjoy this as a guilty pleasure, it just lots of mildly interesting plot devices staged around some action scenes.

Movie #280

11/22/2008

280. Silver Streak (1976)
Off DVR, Shown on Fox Movie Channel (uncut, widescreen)
This movie is funny and is a rare chance to see Gene Wilder act, while it's funny it's not a career stand out for him or Pryor though.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Movies #277-279

11/16/2008

279. Role Models (2008)
In Theaters
This movie really delivers on the laughs where it counts and this is easily the best non-Judd Apatow produced comedy that I've seen in a little bit. Paul Rudd is awesome as always and Sean William Scott does surprisingly well with the role also, he's been picking some smart roles recently, like he all of s sudden actually cares about his career. Must Watch

11/15/2008

277. Quantum of Solace (2008)
In Theaters
This movie kicks so much ass, that it can't really even be quantified. It's an understatement to say that I was surprised that this was the Marc Foster Bond movie, you know the guy who directed Monster's Ball and Neverland. I love how much different this is from the other Bond movies in that it continues a story from the previous film and really makes it more of a movie instead of just another installment in a franchise. MUST WATCH!!!

278. Suspiria (1977)
Off DVR, Shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen, uncut)
Why is this movie considered a classic?? It’s super clunky and drives the viewer to brink of boredom several times, some nice death scenes but they are few and far between. This movie is just odd, but not an endearing oddness.

Monday, November 10, 2008

Movies #275-276

11/05/2008

276. The Kremlin Letter (1970)
Off DVR, Shown on Fox Movie Channel (uncut, widescreen)
This one directed by John Huston is an above average spy movie for the time, must see if you have a fever for some retro cold war spyness.

11/04/2008

275. Scanners (1981)
Off DVR, Shown on IFC (widescreen, uncut)
This movie is pretty well done and really executes on the idea that if I concentrate hard enough I can make your head explode. Patrick McGoohan is always a treat to watch also. Must Watch.

Monday, November 3, 2008

Movie #274

11/01/2008

274. Futurama: Benders Game (2008)
Other Means
While overall I enjoyed the first two Futurama direct to DVD movies more than this one, I did still enjoy this movie but the tie in for the Lord of the Rings storyline was pretty weak, I didn’t mind see their spin on LOR but it seemed a little forced to include it in the movie. I’m always happy to see new Futurama material though

Monday, October 27, 2008

Movie #273

10/24/2008

273. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)
Off DVR, Shown on IFC (widescreen, uncut)
While a lot of the scenes may seem unfocused and without direction or purpose (and a few are), most let you in more on what the reality of the world that the characters inhibit. Overall this was quite an enjoyable watch. Worth Watching.

Monday, October 20, 2008

Movie #272

10/17/2008

272. Babylon A.D. (2008)
Other Means
This was a passion project for the director that he worked on developing for years, so I’m not sure if he was happy with how this ended up but he must have known what he was going for when he cast Vin Diesel as the lead. This is a pretty over the top euro-trashy romp that takes it’s self a little too seriously at times. I can’t really saw I came away from this with anything memorable. Pass

Monday, October 13, 2008

Movie #271

10/10/2008

271. Shaolin vs Evil Dead (2004)
Off DVD
While this movie isn't especially good, nothing can really completely deliver on what my mind came up with when I saw the title on the cheap dvd rack. Pass

Monday, October 6, 2008

Movies #261-270

10/05/2008

270. Shogun Assassin (1980)
Off DVD
GZA's Liquid Swords samples alot of the dialogue from this movie, and after watching it you'll know why, because this movie is super badass. This has as much samurai ass kicking action as you could ever need from one film. Must Watch

10/04/2008

268. Naked Killer 2 (1993)
Off DVD
This movie really threw me for a loop because it has nothing to do with the first Naked Killer, it just seems like they made a movie with the same actress and then just put this title on it to sell it. Stick to the first Naked Killer.

269. War (2007)
Other Means
Big pile of rubbish with a few action scenes thrown in, moving on.

10/03/2008

267. Bug (2006)
Other Means
This play turned movie actually translates pretty well, I'm not an Ashley Judd fan but she really captures the truly desperate woman in this disturbing at times movie.

10/02/2008

266. The Fall (2006)
Other Means
Directing Tarsem again fails to bring the substance, but he always brings the flair, and while parts of this movie are incredibly beautiful they don't really worth together as a movie. Also I felt that we spent to much time in the real world when the fantasy story should have been center piece in the film.

10/01/2008

265. Get Smart (2008)
Other Means
I had kind of low expectations going into this movie, but I was happily surprised with how much chemistry that Carrell and Hathaway have together, this is just a fun action / spy movie.

09/30/2008

262. Bad Sleep Well (1960)
Off DVR, Shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen)
This is a Kurosawa movie that takes place in contemporary times, unlike the majority of his films. The movie follows a family business and all the backstabbing and other politics that go on when legal charges are being brought down on a large company. Well worth the watch.

263. Miracle at St. Anna (2008)
In Theaters
The majority of this movie is really engaging, but it complete falls apart in the last 30 minutes, and for that I'm going to blame the source material that the movie was based on. Disappointing, Spike almost had a home run here.

264. In Between Days (2006)
Off DVR, Shown on Sundance (widescreen, uncut)
This is a very sparse dialogue indie flick that follows one Korean girl as she adjusts to life in North America, there isn't really a lot going on this movie but I wasn't completely bored by it.

09/29/2008

261. The Black Cat (1968)
Off DVR, Shown on IFC (widescreen, uncut)
This is a folk tale adapted quite well for the screen, if your down for a movie with haunted forests and vengeneful spirits than this is right up your alley. Good movie

Movies #253-260

09/28/2008

259. The Giant Claw (1957)
Off DVR, Shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen)
With a title like Giant Claw I was expecting this movie to maybe deal with giant crabs or something like that, but low and behold the featured monster in the movie is a decrepit giant vulture that flies around attacking people and planes and doesn't show up on radar so he can't be tracked. There was barely anything else to keep my attention in this movie, but there are some good laughs throughout (because the movie is so bad, of course).

260. Righteous Kill (2008)
Other Means
A flood of bad press followed the release of this movie, and I had seen the directors previous film with Pacino, 88 Minutes which was terrible. But I have to say this movie isn't nearly as terrible as reported, while the script is from screenwriting 101, watching Pacino and Deniro on screen makes up for a lot of the lacking in the writing. This is definetly watchable, the cast otherwise is really good also with Carla Gugino, John Leguizamo, and Donnie Wahlberg. Also for all the 50 Cent haters, he is barely in the movie, so it's not a problem.

09/27/2008

258. You Don't Mess with the Zohan Unrated (2008)
Other Means
Now I consider myself in the camp of Adam Sandler haters (besides Punch Drunk Love of course), and I had some mightly low expectations for this movie. But I have to say that I laughed pretty hard throughout the length of this unrated version of the film, I'm going to give credit to Judd Apatow for that. This is pretty over the top is terms of the comedy, and if your an Adam Sandler hater this might be worth a watch, but I enjoyed this one anyway.

09/26/2008

257. Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987)
Off DVR, Shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen, uncut)
This film does a good job of making unsympathetic school boys watchable on the back drop of WW2, definetly worth watching if you've seen a Louis Malle film before, this is a good introduction to him. Recommended Watch

09/25/2008

255. The Bank Job (2008)
Off DVD
This is a pretty well done British gangster / heist movie, the reason why this works better than the litany of other British gangster movies is partially based on a true story which gives it an added sense of reality somewhat. I was expecting something more watered down than what this turned out to be, worth a watch if you don't have anything to watch.

256. 21 (2008)
Off DVD
This movie is about as mainstream as mainstream gets, the whole movie looks like it was shot with the same crew and equipment as an episode of CSI, and also it has the weird digital video motion blur in scene with high movement. I don't know why that look is desirable because it looks cheap. The music throughout the movie is already getting dated and this just came out back in March, it was just a compilation of stuff that was popular months before the movie came out. Your not going to miss anything by skipping this movie except seeing Kate Bosworth, who is usually worth admission, but she's not enough alone this time.

09/23/2008

253. Burn After Reading (2008)
In Theaters
This is Cohen Brothers return to form and they nail the farcical nature that some of the films of their past captured. Great acting all around, highly enjoyable. Highly Recommended Watch

254. Snow Angels (2007)
Other Means
With Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell to top your cast your obviously doing something right. David Gordon Green’s film came out before Pineapple Express, but it may have been shot after I’m not sure. Either way this movie is really good with establishing it’s natural setting and characters. The cracker who almost killed The Forbidden Kingdom returns here and actually fits his part really well and has actually flipped my perspective of him. Nicky Katt has a nice appearance and the main girl from The Wackness also has a substantial part. Amy Sedaris is also in this movie but just barely. Worth a watch.
