Movies of 2008 #1-16

1/28/2008

15. Sweeney Todd (2007)
Other Means
-I was surprised at how much I liked this, although I wouldn't probably have liked it as much if there hadn't such a liberal use of the blood geysers

16. The Outrage (1964)
Off DVR, shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen)
-Above average remake of Rashomon, with Shatner, Paul Newman, and Edward G. Robinson.

1/26/2008

12. The Pink Panther (1963)
Off DVR, shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen)
-This movie is boring because this was the first in the series before Peter Sellers character was the main focus

13. First Blood (1982)
Other Means
-I was kind of blown away by this movie because I should have seen it years ago, but being fed this image for years of who Rambo was, the character we see in the 2nd and 3rd movie, and this first movie is completely different in terms of how Rambo is presented to the audience as an enigma, and how we slowly create some kind of compassion for the shell shocked Vietnam vet

14. Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Other Means
-When watching the opening credits for this one I had completely forgotten that James Cameron co-wrote this with Stallone, this movie is typical of the shoot'em-up 80's style sequels, light on story, heavy on bullets

1/01-1/25/2008

1. Cloverfield (2008)
In Theaters
-This has to really be experienced in the theater when it's the only thing your focusing on, because I feel like it loses power on a television screen, it seems more unique on the big screen

2. Before the Devil Knows Your Dead (2007)
Other Means
-Nicely scripted story told from multiple angles that adds up to more than the sum of it's parts

3. Lost In Beijing (2007)
Other Means
-Average movie takes place in Bejing

4. Barberella (1968)
Off DVR, shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen & uncut)
-This movie fails to be truly described in words, this is a must see if you can see it uncersored (a.k.a. not the cable television edit) and in widescreen

5. The World, The Flesh, and The Devil (1959)
Off DVR, shown on Turner Classic Movies (widescreen)
-Touches on similiar territory as I Am Legend with the abandoned Manhattan as the setting of the story, but what takes place her is more of a statment on race relations at the time, but unfortunately the impact of the story has faded somewhat with time, but putting the movie in context of the time (this movie was played in many theaters in the south) helps bring greater appreciation

6. I Am Legend (2007)
Other Means
-I was surprised at how decent this was for a Will Smith movie, and seeing time ravaged Manhattan was nice also

7. Shoot'em Up (2007)
Other Means
-Completely ridiculous Looney Tunes action movie that has to be seen, what's great is that it's over the top and they own it

8. The Invasion (2007)
Other Means
-Average, don't lose sleep staying up to watch this one, because you could always use more sleep

9. Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Other Means
-Average, they kind of brush over the whole fallout from what the main character sets up in terms of the real history

10. Odds Against Tomorrow (1959)
Off DVR, shown on Turner Classic Movies
-Good heist movie, not genre redefining
